Barrels

As many of you know, I have a pretty in depth "bucket list".  My buckets have socks, soap, pasta, laundry detergent and Ham radio equipment in them.  Not to mention beans, boots and bag balm.  I have, however, recently experienced the great delight of barrels.  Not that buckets have lost their appeal - not at all.  But barrels, now there is something to really crow about!  No longer do I have to stack 15 buckets of hard white wheat on the shelf, I can just fill a barrel to overflowing!  That leaves by buckets to tend to supplies that require less space such as baking powder and Italian seasoning.

My wonderful Sir Knight is always thinking of me.  Yesterday, he came home from work bearing gifts.  Some might think flowers or candy or Chinese take-out, but no, he brought barrels!

I was so excited!  Flowers wilt, candy goes straight to my hips and I have never really been that fond of Chinese take-out - but barrels!  Sir Knight really knows the way to a damsel's heart.

Now comes the hard part.  Do I start  a powdered milk barrel or add a rice barrel?  Should I fill one with Kamut?  Or maybe Spelt would be better!  Choices, choices.  What's a girl to do?

  1. Barrels! I'm starting to think I need a few barrels myself. Good for collecting rain water. Good for food and gear storage. Good for caching supplies in remote areas. And of course I could always wear one if my pension dries up. Yep, I like barrels, too. Gonna get me some and start filling them up tomorrow. Thanks for the incentive.

Oh, and I'd accept the Chinese take-out if that were presented instead of a barrel. Broccholi Beef is pretty good. ;)

  2. I'd take Chinese takeout, too, but only if it were real Chinese food, not that cornstarched globby mess sold around here. And my vote for what to fill a barrel with would be quinoa - I just started cooking with it a few weeks ago, and love it - I can't eat wheat, rye or barely, and do get tired of rice, oatmeal, and grits. Quinoa is my new go-to grain - even the kids like it...so much I must find out if I can grow it here next year.

  3. I just wanted to post and let you know how much I appreciate your site. I have been poking around it for a few months now and have been very inspired by you. I'm a 32 yr old non-denominational Christian living in Illinois. My husband and I over the past year have decided to become more self-reliant and more prepared for rough times to come. I am a stay at home mom to an 11 yr old son and now am homeschooling him as we felt that public middle school was doing more harm than good. Much of our extra space is devoted to food storage and storage of everyday necessities. My husband introduced me to your site and ever since then I have been reading faithfully. You inspire me. I can't thank you enough for your thoughts and words of wisdom. May God Bless You!
