A few weeks ago Maid Elizabeth, along with Miss Serenity and a neighborhood friend, attended a large, mostly literary, science fiction convention. The Con was a week long and the girls attended almost every day, and even included Master Hand Grenade on the last day (his only day off work). It was fun to watch (and help) the girls dress as a different character each day and then hear their stories when they returned.
They attended various boards, frequented vendor booths, and bought books directly from authors. They attended an Old English dance, had light saber battles in the middle of the aisle, and reverently touched (and smelled) $1600 first edition books.
Although they couldn't possibly attend every lecture and class they would have liked, they had a wonderful, whimsical escape into the world of science fiction!

The scars on Miss Serenity's cheek reminded me of something from 50 years ago. I had joined the Air Force and was taking training at one of their largest training bases which was also used to train foriegn military from allied countries. There were always a few Black Africans (we also had Northern Africans and middle East students too) who had similar scars on their cheek. Similar but real and actually quite deep. The first time I ever saw it I jumped to the conclusion that it was the result of a lion attack. But after seeing more than just a few Africans with these scars I realized it had to be intentional and probably some kind of tribal tradition. I never found out and do not know which African country they were from.

ReplyDeleteHow fun!! Years ago my son, then around 10, and I got to go to a Star Wars convention. It was a wonderful time for the both of us.

ReplyDeleteOoohhh!!! Love it! I'm going "Steampunk" for an upcoming event I'm attending. Got a lot of ideas from your daughter's costumes I might want to incorporate!
ReplyDeleteWorldCon? it was fairly close to you, if I'm not mistaken. A great source for steampunk projects is the plumbing section of any hardware store-all sorts of brass shapes...
