Boasting Rights

Once again Miss Serenity has hunting boasting rights.  She is our most faithful hunter (she LOVES it) and has been rewarded with a buck that is even bigger than last years catch.

This year Serenity hunted in an open field with no discernable cover.  In order to get into the field before the deer came up the draw, Serenity borrowed Sir Knight's ghillie suit and SSG and staked out her little plot of land just before evening overtook the daylight.

First, the doe's ventured into the field, grazing while their ears twitched, alert for possible danger.  Satisfied that there was no immediate threat, a buck gracefully trotted to join his harem.  Two hundred yards away, Miss Serenity followed the buck in her site.  Adjusting the windage, she slowed her breathing, set the first trigger and then gently squeezed the second trigger.  Two ragged steps and a somersault later her trophy lay on the ground.

Within minutes, Serenity had called home and Sir Knight, Master Hand Grenade and the two little children were by her side, preparing to gut her kill and haul him home (she shot him just across the road from the shouse).  An hour later, he had been gutted, skinned and hung in our shed.

As evening fell on Little Shouse on the Prairie, Miss Serenity regaled us with her newly minted hunting stories and we thanked God for His wonderful bounty.

  2. Wonderful !!!! What a good looking animal! On a side note, wearing white while hunting is generally considered a bit high risk. Too much buck fever out there and at dusk one bit of white looks the same as another to some. White tail and a white scarf are not a good mix. I think these are a great idea & substitute:

    1. It's a great comment, but , when hunting on private property and both you and the property owners know you're the only one there, it's a pretty safe bet.

  8. Congratulations. I got one on Thursday that was a little smaller than hers; it was my first crossbow kill. Has she had an opportunity to hunt with her crossbow yet?

  14. Now THAT is what a properly Home Schooled child can accomplish. It speaks volumes! This is skill worth more than a gold coin when everyone is hungry and the stores are shut. Congrats to Miss Serenity and especially to her two parents and the sibling crew.

    God Bless,

  16. A friend of mine does animal rescue, and actually has a deer right now. I'm not opposed to hunting at all, but it is fascinating to get up that close to an animal that is normally wild - be it dead or alive. Do you guys ever use the skin? Tanning is a dying art it seems, and the deer would have a nice winter coat by now, I would suspect.

  17. Excellent work Miss Serenity... You should be proud and have earned the right to be so... My grandmother hunted well into her 80's and seeing you posing with this beauty brought back a flood of wonderful memories. I hope your passion and ability lasts into your old age as well... ~Ali

  18. Congrats, Miss Serenity! Nice buck! Here in Indiana, we're limited to shotgun slugs, handguns, and carbines firing handguns rounds. (We have separate bow and black powder seasons). We also have a requirement to wear blaze orange doing 'smokeless powder' season. A good hunter, as I suspect you are, still gets a nice harvest. Knowing there are folks like you and your family still learning and using the skills that made the country great gives me some hope for the future.
