Miss Serenity has big news - she shot her first deer! One of our goals as parents is to produce useful human beings. We want our children to be able to take care of themselves and their families, "But if any provide not for his own, and specifically for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel" 1 Timothy 5:8. Part of that preparation is learning to hunt, gut, skin and process wild game. As you can see, Miss Serenity is well on her way!
Serenity is our cowgirl, so her rifle of choice is a .45 lever action. She is a dead-on shot with this rifle. She felled her deer with one shot - through the lungs and piercing the heart - instant death. She was using ammunition that she and Sir Knight reloaded right in our living room.
Our world is changing. Our children need to know how to take care of themselves and those they love. Now is the time to teach them.
Good job, Miss Serentiy! Glad you didn't wait as long as I did to do that - I was 39 before I shot my first deer.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad her 45 did the job quickly - the one I shot with a 9 mm (in the head, twice) took a while to die - it wasn't pretty.

To Miss Serenity, Kid' You got me beat. I was raised in suburbia by parents with masters degree's that thought hunting was appalling. I never got to hunt, never fished. I learned much when I was in the military but to this day, I have yet to go hunting and have yet to take my first deer.
One day Miss Serenity, you will remember the time you spent with your parents and with your Dad shooting and hunting.
Cherish the memories and knowledge you gained and one day pass them on to your children. You are one very, very fortunate young lady.

ReplyDeleteOne of the blessings of a successful hunt is the memory that is replayed at mealtime. The simultaneous sadness at taking a life and the elation of the accomplishment enhances the spiritual experience and reverence for the sustenance the Lord has provided us.
i have twins (boy and girl) almost 4 1/2yrs old. two weekends ago, i took my son and we saw some does but we can only take bucks in our zone. this past weekend, i took my girl hunting. we parked the truck and walked about 50yards when she saw a log she wanted to sit on and so we did. we had a snack, then we sat quietly a few minutes. she kept quiet fairly good. i rattled and grunted and she stomped the leaves for a couple minutes and we waited. about 20 minutes later, she whispered she wanted to go home. i started packing our stuff and saw a buck coming down the road. before i could get her ear muffs on her, she saw it too and SHOUTED---LOOK DADDY THERE'S A DEER!!!! i just said yes it sure is sissy as i watched it run off. if i never hunt again, i will not have as good a day in the field as i did then. congratulations miss serenity for your harvest and be thankful for your parents who provided that opportunity.
