Symphony of Sickness

I'm so sorry for the silence but I have a house full of illness.  The children, one by one, have succumbed to a nasty sickness that involves aggressive coughing fits.  Unfortunately, even Sir Knight wasn't spared.  Maid Elizabeth and I have been spending our days and nights caring for our ailing flock.  We send each person to bed with a bowl (they are coughing so hard that they are throwing up), a cool wet washcloth and a glass of water and then we spend our night making the rounds, checking to see if everyone is breathing after a particularly nasty coughing fit.  I will post as time allows.

Keep your powder dry.

  1. Prayers are streaming for the healing of your loved ones.
Times like this, is when I pray that we were closer in geography Enola.
God Bless you and Maid Elizabeth with endurance and passover immunity, and may He smite this virus now away from your family.

  2. May the Good Lord bless them and I shall pray for their recovery.

  3. Oh, what a shame! Prayers for your sick family members, Enola, and for you and Maid Elizabeth as you tend to them.

It is too late for Enola's family to avoid this disease, but it may not be too late for others to learn to avoid it. I am not a medical professional, but I know I will be covering my nose and mouth with the inside crook of my elbow whenever I am around someone who is sneezing and/or coughing and s/he doesn't have the common sense or the common courtesy to do the same. And I will be washing my hands diligently. I call these tactics "defensive avoidance" (sort of like "defensive driving").

Stay well, all, we will need our strength to get through these troubling times. God bless.

  4. Speedy recovery and prayers to the family.

  5. Sending prayers and positive thoughts to you and your family. Make sure you and Maid Elizabeth rest properly as well so that you may not catch this bug. I am sorry this is happening to your family, but this should be a warning to the rest of us that this may be a bad year for the illness bugs! Be diligent, wash hands often and stay away from crowds who may be harboring illness.

Hope and pray for a speedy recovery!

  6. I have a herbal "remedy" that I call "cold and flu #1" that I have prepared, with the help of my "master herbalist" (biological) daughter. It would be too late to dose everyone in Enola's household, but it would be a good thing to have handy just in case. Enola, I would be happy to share with you if you could email me....ladylovesred49@aol.com..... it's something that I keep on hand "just in case".

I so feel for you and Maid Elizabeth....I sat up night after night with my son when he was quite young, massive ear infections and tonsils...and I nursed my (now ex) husband through bout after bout of bronchitis and "flu"....it's exhausting, and in a way you keep wondering when YOU will get it....

I read one time that a mother who maintains a prone position for more than 5 hours generates a panic equal to 9 on the Richter scale....I thought it was funny then, but it really isn't...

Prayers for you and your family.

  7. We have had the same thing in our house a couple of weeks ago. I couldn't get the sofa off of my back for 3 days and then spent another week so weak I didn't want to do anything.

The funny thing is no one had even left the house for a couple of weeks prior to even catch anything. When grandson comes in from school he immediately washes hands and face and changes clothes. In my opinion it is something air-born.

Praying that you all are better soon.

  8. We find elderberry syrup and tea fight off these nasty bugs. If they persist, the tea and syrup help soothe the cough and lessen the length of the illness. You can make your own or buy the mix under the name Sambucol. Good luck!

  9. Enola,
Might you mix up a Tablespoon of your Rose hip jelly in a cup of warm water and dispense with a tablet of zinc. Right now, your family and you need to boost your immunity defenses. Echinachea at bedtime will also boost their immunity and calm them so they can get a sound sleep.
If the phlegm is thick or any color other than clear, that they are expectorating, they may have shared a bacterial bronchitis, in which case, they would benefit from antibiotics only if they are running fevers as well with the productive cough, and it is over 101.F orally.
The best thing is keep the secretions thin, by giving them as much clear liquids as they can tolerate.
If they are vomiting as well with all the other symptoms, call your Doctor for an antiemetic.

  11. Hang in there Enola, Hang in there.

  12. Oh! Don't apologize, you and Maid Elizabeth are doing what every real strong woman should do in this kind of situation... I hope everything will be ok soon, and I will keep you and your family in my prayer. (Sorry for my poor English, I'm a French Canadian person)

  13. there are sure alot of illnesses that can bring on all of those symptoms..i am praying that you will all recover soon..

  15. I'll be praying for you and your family, Enola. And I agree, you don't need to apologize for not posting. Taking care of your family is much more important, and you have already given your readers so much. Don't stress over your blog. <3

    In Christ,

  16. Report in Bonner County Daily (9/28) Bee indicates pertussis outbreak in Bonner County.
You may want to compare symptoms w/ what you are experiencing.

  17. Enola, Please check in and let us know how the battle is going.

  18. Sounds like pertussis....coughing fits...vomiting after coughing fit.....We had this a few years back. Expect it to be for the long haul as it may well be weeks or months before the coughing ceases.

No apologies necessary. Take care of your family.

  19. I hope everyone feels better! I'll be praying for you all!
