What is it with Zombies and Survivalists?

I have been studying the inexplicable link between survivalists and zombies for quite some time, as I am married to a survivalist who loves a good (if you could ever call a zombie movie good) zombie flick at least once a month and who has passed this bizarre gene down to our son.  Every so often, the littlest boy, the girls and I will put ourselves to bed, and Sir Knight and Master Hand Grenade will break out the zombie movies.  No matter how many times I have asked what is so alluring about the living dead eating everyone in sight, the closest thing I ever get to an answer is knowing looks passed between my men and something to the effect of "It's just a guy thing I guess".

Apparently, it is not just my survival guys that are infected with the zombie virus.  There is no end to zombie websites, zombie discussions and zombie end-of-the-world scenarios.  Even JWR's Survival Blog is not exempt!  I was looking for good, solid, useful TEOTWAWKI information and what do I find?  The first zombie proof house!  How is a girl supposed to compete with that?  I just want to prepare for everyday scenarios, like a major pandemic, the failure of the dollar, famine, civil unrest - simple things like that.  But zombies?  How do you prepare to defend yourself against being your neighbors dinner?

And now, I am becoming one of them.  The other day, as Sir Knight and I drove up our driveway, I mentioned the fact that the enclosure around our sun room was not zombie proof.  The words came out before I even knew what I was saying!  Oh, my.  Now, in addition to preparing for the end of the world as we know it, I have to look out for flesh eating undead!

And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the siege and straitness, wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall straiten them.

  1. ugh. I was going to post a lighthearted comment about what they mean by zombies- an all-encompassing, "load for bear" ready for anything... but then I saw Jeremiah. Going to have to look up what came right before the "...and I will cause."

  2. Now that made me laugh out loud... I have to confess that I enjoy a good zombie movie/game/book myself. It's not just the guys who enjoy the scary delights of flesh munching undead...

  3. Big ROFL I'm a zombie movie fan myself, for some inexplicable reason.

In all reality, though, the term "zombie" has come to mean nothing more than human bad guys out to cause you harm. Nobody actually expects the undead, but just as the army calls enemy targets Tangos, we civilians call them Zombies.

  4. That was hilarious! Just about every guy I know enjoys zombie stuff, whether it's video games or a movie. *sigh* It is a guy thing, simple as that. lol :)

  5. When I first read this I immediately thought of the seige of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. More than a million people in the city of Jerusalem died because the Romans cut them off from all supplies for more than a year. There was a lot of flesh eating going on. You can read more at http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Fall-of-Jerusalem-70-AD:-Cannibal-Lady-Feeds-on-Babys-Flesh&id=5476400. The author, Josephus, was an eyewitness to all of the carnage.

I find that when we read something in the Bible from the past, it usually happens again in the future. God save us!

  6. I love the architectural design of that cement Zombie proof, above ground bunker "house".

But, If you were going to spend that much on concrete moveable walls, why would you risk the security of the entire building to having a roll up garage door type of closure on the BOTTOM floor?

I'd of had the bottom floor fitted with the concrete
    sliding doors as well.

Zombies indeed are a faction of life to consider in your security preps.

  7. I was happy to see the label "zombie" at the end of your post, but I was very disappointed to find that this is the only zombie article.

  8. I love zombie books! Zombie movies, sometimes. I personally think preppers like them because the represent one of the ultimate survival scenarios. I feel like if I can prepare for a zombie apocalypse, by default I'll be prepared for any disaster. :0)

  9. I think that what makes the "Zombie" scenario so appealing is that it is a "Clean" scenario ... psychologically speaking. It would be wonderful if the only targets were limited to flesh-eating non-human beings. The reality for most TEOTWAWKI scenarios is that if you had to defend your property, it would most likely be against some other starving "dad" who is trying to scavenge supplies for his starving family. Letting him take your supplies could mean starvation for YOUR family. That's a tough one to deal with, mentally, and not as "clean" a scenario. My favorite would have to be I Am Legend. GREAT movie!

  10. I can relate to Sir Knight. And I am not a guy. Never have been a guy. Never will be. I'm a middle aged (ok ok, a little past that) female and I am hooked on the Zombie books. My favorite series is by Rhiannon Frater. I think it's the survival aspect that appeals to me. That and the characters who must come up with ways to defeat death and make a new life/world. Fraters trilogy also focuses on two women - sort of the Thelma and Louise of Zombie-land. I also like the books by Mark Tufo. He adds humor to the apocalypse!
